NOW //pedestrians: new street photography : Bito Cel, the artist looks into ways of photographing pedestrians, at light and composition, new techniques or the lack of. He looks at street photography as it were a studio session, searches places with appropriate light, setting, background and waits for the adequate passer by – selective techniques to present a more intensive way where the subject is almost extracted from its surroundings.

Train takes about 2 hrs depending on which one we get, and then there's a 15 min walk the other end. Currently I am thinking about going on Friday, though that's obviously dependent on what whoever else wants to come thinks.

This graffiti, like millions of other forms of street art in Barcelona is posted on a blogspot:

Barrio Gotico is perhaps one of the richest places in graffiti art. The Photoblog intends to document these and get people talking about them. Enjoy, its a pretty cool blog - it looks at architecture, urban spaces, etc, etc...

Makes me think of graffiti art as a collage - not in itself - which it could well be - but as the idea of art on the urban canvas:

As an idea-rich fragment from a disperse source [the graffiti artist] placed onto other fragments already existing in their own right and already with established ideas/connotations/symbolism behind them: a garage door, an alley corner, a park bench, a road sign, etc. Perhaps overlayed in time with an announcement, a company sticker, an advertisement.

The [accidental?] placing of all these fragments by different authors at different moments in time might tell us something about the inhabitants of the area or about the political or social issues involved. Perhaps only understood when you look at the relationship between each fragment....

Architectural Copyright : Architect Sues David Childs and SOM Over Freedom Tower Design

Shine, 40, in a lawsuit filed on Nov. 8 that Childs copied a project Shine had produced while studying for his Master's at Yale University School of Architecture. Shine claims to have presented the project to Childs in the Autumn of 1999.

The project, named “Olympic Tower,” is a twisting tower with a symmetrical diagonal column grid, expressed on the exterior of the building, following the twisting surface created by the floor plates’ geometry. Shine copyrighted the idea last spring, and is suing for copyright infringement under the U.S. Copyright Act.

Shine, who says he has always been fascinated by the twisting forms in ceramics, says he came up with the idea while attending a studio course with architect Cesar Pelli. Childs was one of the reviewers criting the final projects.

SOM quickly responded to the suit’s filing with a statement, claiming, among other things, that the components of the Freedom Tower had been in development by the firm long before Shine's project.

Given that the lawsuit doesn't deal with the current version of Freedom Tower (it was extensively redesigned after the NYPD and NYFD contributed to the discussion). Regardless, the trial will be very important in what it says about the application of intellectual copyright to architectural designs.

Architectural works in the US have been protected by the U.S Copyright office since 1990. The governmental body defines architectural works as "the design of a building embodied in any tangible medium of expression, including a building, architectural plans, or drawings." That's fine, but judging if an architectural work copies a previous design, as in this case, is a very gray matter. Here it pertains to the diamond-shaped facade.

Eisenstein's October Intellectual Montage

Intellectual Montage

This extract of the 1928 Soviet film by Russian film director, Eisenstein is an example of what he later goes to refer to as "intellectual montage". October was one of a series of films that portrayed the Soviet Revolutions that lead to Communist power.

Montage:

-"the essence of cinema", quoted by Eisenstein in 'Montage of Cine-Attractions'. 1925

-and idea in motion

"From the process of production, a technical term has passed into linguistic currency, designating a mechanical assembly, a set of water conduits, or machine tools. The beautiful word of such constructions is 'montage'."

('How I became a Director', 1945 - FW 3, p. 243)

"What we need is science, not art. The word creation is useless. It should be replaced by labour. One does not create a work, one constructs it with finished parts, like a machine. Montage is a beautiful word: it describes the process of constructing with prepared fragments."

In effect, montage is the assembling together in a meaningful and intentional order of individual parts which already have a name, and meaning and purpose. The outcome is something new that only means something due to the relationship between the separate parts.

Eisenstein never defines what is meant with "fragment" but continually uses it as a notion defined by its context, its associations, causes or effects - like words or phrases with multiple meanings.

Intellectual Montage:

An idea is not represented with an image, but rather, through the relationship of two or more images, or even fragments - presumably coming from disperse sources.

These fragments are already charged with meaning and symbolism which he puts together to form a new meaning. Eisentein was interested in the symbolism of the images, but his films were not meant to be looked as just metaphors put together - as Metz observes there is a level of dramatic action.

Balazs, a critic of Eisenstein saw this intellectual montage as a form of "cine-language" or "film-writing", whereby the film becomes ideograms or essays in hieroglyphs. Balazs saw this as pointless, you might as well read it in writing and understand it better.

Intellectial montage may be best understood with a scene from Strike, another film in the same series as October.

....this is what i've taken so far from 'Montage Eisenstein' by Jaques Aumont. Correct me if i'm wrong. Eisenstein was a film maker and presumed theoriser, but his contradictions and lack of systematic methodology made it hard for him to get his ideas understood. Only one time did he explicitly depict montage as a method according to Aumont.
